On Friday afternoon the volkssport group met at the Highland National Park, Information Centre and then a motorcade or convoy departed for the 20 minute trip along the Cabot Trail Highway to the parking lot at Trout Brook camping ground and the Trail Head for "Vieux Chemin des Cap - Rougien" :

ACADIAN TRAIL 08 OCTOBER 2011

The Acadian Trail a loop style trail proved to be much more challenging then expected. Due to weather conditions the previous few days before the walk event with bridges washed out along the trail.

However the 74 walkers continued their hike up Cheticamp Mountain to a spectacular view of the village and coastline below.

The Island Hoppers on the West Mabou Trails June 12, 2011.
The walk was to begin on Beach Road off Collindale Road however there is road construction taken place here throughout the rest of the summer. Local walker/hiker Nadine Hunt saved the day by offering to lead us on other trails located in this NS Provincial Park. Nadine is part of the local association who convinced Nova Scotia to turn this area into a park instead of another golf course. Natural Resources NS along with the local trails group are now working on clearing trails and fixing roads in the area.
The weather and the trail system was almost perfect with great views of the Mabou Harbour and lighthouse.

NORTH RIVER TRAIL to Salmon Pools

An absolutely perfect day for a walk along the North River Trail, an extreme contrast to the previous weekend.
However due to the rainfall over the last few days a decision was made by the walk leader (Rollie) and the walk event sweep (Carmel) that we would only go as far as the Salmon Pools near the former MacLennan homestead for a return trip of 10k's.
Anyone wanting to go further up river to the falls were on their own!!!
On the previous trip to the falls each of of us had had a fall, so it was better to enjoy a Safer walk then to worry about a participant getting hurt.
The trail past this former settlement is much less developed, with 6 brook crossings (no bridges) and at least 8 dead fall trees to go around including a rocky cliff area that is quite wet and slippery.
The participants agreed to continue only to the 5k turn around point.
We had an excellent and enjoyable walk event, though the trail was very wet in most area but with a nice bright sunshiny day we arrived at the salmon pools, where we were able to watch the fishermen casting in the pools; this made the trip that much more enjoyable.

19 September 2010 Lucy Nardini, Carmel Coffin and Rollie Coombes on the North River Trail to North River Falls. 18K, 7 Hours on the trail!!

These small brooks are now rivers and many of the bridges have been washed away with spring break up and the heavy rains we have had this past month (September)!
The 2010 walk schedule has rated this trail as 2B THIS IS AN ERROR, The North River Trail should be rated 4D

3 PEAKS HIKING CHALLENGE

Four of our CBIH members "Certin to be Hurtin" attended the 3 Peaks hiking event in the CB Highlands National Park:

Bruce was our TEAM CAPTAIN. There were 10 teams of 4 involved and they are definitely planning it again for next year. There maybe some members who would consider participating next year-it is a great challenge and leaves you with a wonderful sense of accomplishment!

The walk out to Cape Perce was once again a great experience for all. Excellent views of Flint Island, a bird watchers delight, a rugged but scenic coastline.

After the walk at Schooner Pond 17 members of the group went out to dinner in Port Morien at "Dock Y'ur Dory Restaurant and B&B.

As part of the CVF 24th Convention and Annual General Meeting the Cape Breton Island Hoppers have begun a seies of pre-walk programs to get club members familiar with the various convention trails and walks that will take place on 28-29-30 and 31 May, 2010
The pre-walk group met at Petersfields Provincial Park on Sunday, 28 March, on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Still some snow on the trails but very passable and in good shape.
During the walk event we came upon a group of children on an Easter Egg hunt, a great day for the kids and a wonderful day for a walk.

The Ceilidh Trails stretches along the west coast of Cape Breton Island parallel to Highway 19.

These are photos taken Friday 01 May 2009. This is a pre-check of the Start Point/the trail for the 42 Km Marathon and the venue that will host our evening dinner event after the walk.

Eleven of the the 16 Island Hoppers who participated in the Antigonish Weekend from the 8th to the 10 August 2008. Beaver Mountain Provincial Park and Trail system. A wonderful walk in the hills with a morning mist and a little rain.

A Trip To Ghost Beach

Here are some pictures of Rilla on the new section (just completed today Oct 31!) of the Trans-Canada Trail that leads to Ghost Beach. An appropriate day for the excursion!

Rilla & Jim McLean helped me to setup the walk event across the Causeway and to Ghost Beach during the 50th anniversary celebrations. Ghost Beach is located behind the Coast Guard complex at the Canso Causeway locks. However due to the terrain and her official duties at the ceremonies she was unable to complete the trip to the Ghost Beach Trail.

Some upgrading and a lot of hard work by the Trans-Canada Trail group from the Inverness area has resulted in Rilla being able to get to the trail. A wonderful accomplishment.

In Remembrance of Linda Harb

The President of The Central Nova Volkssport Club, Tanya McNutt has informed us that Linda Harb of their club passed away due to a massive stroke.

Linda Harb is on the right with her friend and roomate (from the Magdalen Islands) Bettie Spense (l). Photos is provided by another good friend Lynn Rawlinson. Linda had participated in several walks with the CBIH along with her husband Nash who predeceased her 2 years ago. Linda had been to our walk weekend this year in Baddeck and also in Louisbourg for all of our 10th anniversary events and many of you who had been in the Magdalens will remember her as well. Linda was also in Sydney paddling and racing one of the "dragon boats".

To appreciate the magnitude of the following photos especially around any of the coastline and beaches click on the image to zoom in for a closer shot and views that you cannot appreciate unless you visit these wonderful little islands on your own. This is an outdoors adventurers paradise, kayaking, boating, sailing,walking, hiking, biking and great food.

A six hour ferry ride to the Magdalen Islands and the first Island is Entry Island or Isle d'Entree, this is the only inhabitated island that is not connected to the remainder of the islands by bridges or sandbars. This small island makes up 5% of the english speaking inhabitants of the Magdalens.

Above is the hotel and pathways to the beach, this where the second bus and where all of the 21 CBIH members stayed.

The SP of the first walk on Tuesday morning on Ile du Cap-aux-Meules.

Below is a carving of fisherman at work and in the next photo the fisher is cutting up some fresh mackerel for his own use.Below:Part of our first 10k walk was a walkabout on the wharves.

What looks like a ship or barge just above the break water is really a part of the rocks and coastline that has been sculpted by local artisans. Click on the same images at the top of this page for a closer view.

PRE-WALK TO WILD COVE AND GOOSEBERRY COVE

There is always something to gain when doing a pre-walk as the five adventurers found out while trying to locate a good route through this very special place along the Cape Breton coast near Louisbourg.

The Pre-Walk To Wild Cove and Gooseberry Cove above proved to be one of the most fascinating coastal walk we have attempted, wild flowers abounded everywhere, hidden beaches, reefs and beautiful scenery around each cove and inlet.

The Trek Into Money Point

In the photo above you can see St Paul's Island and I am told it is the most northerly point of Nova Scotia while we were at the most northerly point of Cape Breton. Thats Bill Hopkins making his way down the trail to the coastal plain below.

Its true! I swear it and now we have the proof.
Phil and Anne Irons have led several walks along the Broad Cove Trail near Inverness and each time the Buffalo would not cooperate. They usually hide in the nearby woods or they were so far off in the distance they were hard to distinguish and members of our group were somewhat skeptical but now we have the proof. Note these photos were taken shortly after our walk event in Inverness on Sunday September 4th.

After crossing the causeway to the mainland the group returned to the Island and proceeded along Ghost Beach which is located behind the DFO and Coast Guard Complex at the locks. We then crossed over a Bailey bridge, now known as "Ghost Bridge", that was installed by 45 Field Engineers out of Victoria Park, Sydney.
